 SELLOUT CROWD, 3-0 Loss

Well, the crowd was incredible. We fell 3-0 tonight to Columbus on goals from Marshall and Moreno (2). To all of you out at the park, a wholehearted, THANK YOU. The stands were packed, you were loud, and it was an excellent atmosphere. The new Ink Pavilion kicked off behind the Piojo banner in centerfield, and was a success. Pictures of that coming soon.

Don't forget about the Reserve match tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. at Swope Park. Come watch the Reserves, who are 3-0-2 this season in MLS RD play.

Tonight, Zavagnin became the second player in Wizards history to surpass the 20,000 minutes played plateau for the Wizards. Garcia was the first and is the only person ahead of Zavagnin on the team's all-time minutes played list. He stands as the player with the 7th most minutes played for the same team, behind: Cobi Jones, 25,157 (Galaxy); Jaime Moreno, 22,167 (D.C. United); C.J. Brown, 21,750 (Fire); Kevin Hartman, 21,735 (Galaxy); Jason Kreis, 20,290 (Dallas); Nick Garcia, 20,158 (Wizards); Kerry Zavagnin, 20,001 (Wizards).

  1. today was a first for me...the first time i ever left a game before the final wistle blew...i love the wizards but the poor performance they put on today was rediculous...first columbus had a game on tuesday and two of their starting defenders were out...second, Lopez could not complete a pass to save his life, was he drunk...i'm just pointing out the obvious here, i love the wizards but today was just a really bad day...which is quickly becoming a trend.

  4. I find many of the decisions Vermes makes to be suspect. Whether it be the hiring of Onalfo, the trading of Garcia, the signing of a bunch of S. Americans that either don't play or don't contribute down to the bringing on-board of his BV Stars crony Parry for the Jr. program all he seems to be good at his promoting himself and spending Patterson's money.

I am a season ticket holder and have been for years. There is no question that the current ownership group is far superior to the Hunt family but the owners and the fans deserve far better than what the current technical staff has to offer.

I was a little concerned at the press conference when OnGoal was introduced. Cliff Illig mentioned how they didn't know much about soccer but couldn't turn Mr. Hunt down. Trust me, this current regime is not the group that you want to have teaching you.

  5. I'd be surprised if half the crowd from the game come back. They were treated to a horrible display of soccer by this team. Way to lose fans, guys.....

  6. I am worried we blew a big chance to make some new fans last night.

  7. Note to Hillcrest- don't post "anonymous" posters. I say people should identify themselves if they want to post. That's my practice.

It was a pathetic effort, no doubt, but jumping on Onalfo is pretty lame just yet. He has 19 of 29 players with no more than 1.5 years of MLS experience. I do think the Garcia/Burciaga moves are hurting them on D right now, but Myers will likely pan out, somewhere, if not on D.

It's not good right now, but let's face it- the team is being rebuilt. It's too early to judge the wisdom of Ongoal.

I got shellacked for my "Cause for Alarm" article months ago. Much of what I said was accurate, but I was too hard on the coach and organization. Time is needed.

  8. Reepicheep,

Your comment on the 19 players with 1.5 years of experience or less is misleading, considering in that number you have our DP Claudio Lopez, our attacking midfielder who's played in the EPL, Trujillo, who's been playing in Colombia, and Colombano who was playing professionally in Argentina before coming here. And of the 13 players we used on Saturday night, only 3 (Harrington, Hohlbein, Leathers) had less then 2 full years professional experience.

So the lack of experience is a bit of a cop out for the performance Saturday and continued poor performance offensively (considering all the inexperienced players are on the back line).

  9. The WIZARDS player just want to pretty in the field.but all they look worse than a Amateur team playing in Kansas Amateur league. Way to go they should get a totally new defense staring with Jimmy Conrad.

  10. Ok, here is a cliche;

you don't throw the baby out with the bath water...

Yes we are in last place, Yes we did not look good...
Trust me, it doesn't take a genius to know that jobs are at stake, Onalfo, Vermes and the 26 players know it and after the display on Saturday it went from evident to obvious. I am interested to see how the bounce.

Now, get rid of Conrad? come on, him and Hartman are our defense, not to mention that Conrad scores more goals than some of our forwards!

Repicheep, might as welll change your name to anonymous, what is the difference! its a blog site, get use to it

  11. Mike,

I'm not making the lack of MLS experience on the part of half the team (to grant you Lopez, Columbano, and Trujillo) as a cop out. I'm just saying it will take more than 11 games to work the pieces right.

Yes, I take your point about the experience level of those who played Sat. night. Too bad all 3 of the inexperienced players were on D.

Trust me, I'm not defending anything about Saturday night. They sucked. The coaches did a bad job. Nothing good happened that night (except my buddy getting one of those Wizards scarfs for throwing back a ball). I'm just saying it's too early to talk about ditching Onalfo and co.

  12. Didn't see the game but just looking over the stats. Defense ain't all they are lacking. They have scored no more than three goals total in the last eight or so games. Holy Crap! I know defense wins games but a little offense might keep a few fans as well.
