 Expanded Results

Well you've seen the final score and the starters. Here is a little more detail and some photos. First the photos:

Some of the younger players play keep away prior to the match.

Coach addresses the first squad that played after the initial 30-minute session.

Davy and Jack knock a ball between each other at short distance. Davy is still waiting to get back from off-season surgery, but Jack was able to play a solid 30 minutes this morning. For some that have been asking, Kronberg has a tweaked shoulder. He is fine but has not yet participated in full scrimmages. He should be back soon.

The view out the back of the apartment building. Watch out for alligators.

Columbus brought on a new team for each 30-minute session. Our first 11 played the entire first 30, with most staying on for the second 30 as well. Conrad exited at 45 for Leathers (who played right back, with Hohlbein going to the center). Morsink came off at 45 for Jewsbury and Marinelli came off at 45 for Watson.

To start the final 30, the lineup looked like this:

----------Pardo--------

--Leathers----William-----Marquess--

------McMahen----Jewsbury (Lowery in 75th)--

Raybould---------Watson---------Espinoza

---------Colombano-----DiCicco-------

Crew had several trialists and draft picks as yet unidentified on a roster by number in the match, including a goal scorer, so I won't run down their lineup or goals. If you're interested, thecrew.com will have the information later. Wizards highlights:

10th minute-Myers works give-and-go with Pore to get in behind Crew defense. He picked out Sealy making a near post run and delivered an excellent cross onto Sealy's head. Sealy snapped the ball toward goal, but former Wizards goalkeeper Will Hesmer was there to block the shot wide.

25th minute-Sealy works hard to win back a ball in midfield and plays a ball slightly forward for Marinelli in the center of the park. Marinelli immediately puts Pore through behind the defense, but Pore's shot goes just wide of the left post.

31st minute-Hartman blocks Columbus header at the top of his box (after long ball over the top behind the defense) then reacts quickly to push a rebound shot by Schelotto wide while still well off his line.

60th minute-Hartman makes an excellent save just before the whistle to end the second session. Alejandro Moreno dropped a ball off for left back Leonard Griffin who cuts centrally and shoots from 25+ yards. The shot looked destined for the upper-right corner, but Hartman laid out to parry the shot clear.

74th minute-McMahen hits Raybould in full stride up the right flank from deep in midfield. Raybould continues toward the line, then cuts abruptly putting the ball on his left foot. His cross past the back post is headed down by Colombano for DiCicco whose sliding shot goes just wide of the near post.

Those were the biggest highlights. We looked very good early, and the team is just getting into the 3-5-2 system. The formation allows us to use our speed on the wings and Marinelli's creativity very well. It will be fun to watch everyone get used to playing the new system. Remember, this is the formation we played in 2000 and won MLS Cup.

  1. We did have Preki in 2000, any chance he will come out of retirement? :-)

  2. I hope the 3-5-2 comes around. If we have the personnel it can be a lot of fun to watch.

I remember DC trying to run that out opening day last year and we destroyed them by the same 4-0 score.
