Hello all, we have seen today some pretty fervent opposition to the Dora/Scooby announcement in yesterday's weekly release on Big Soccer and here at Hillcrest Road. First of all, know that we have many different events in the works for many different demographics. Since the schedule has not yet been released and all events have not yet been finalized, only our first promotion of the season is public knowledge.
As all of you know, soccer fans in this country come in many shapes and sizes. A large portion of our fans are adults (and some adolescents) that like standing, screaming and yelling, but another large group consists of families with small children. This has always been the case. We will cater to both throughout the season and hope that by catering to one, no one from a different demographic feels "alienated". Our focus is always on the 90 minutes of soccer (we are a soccer team after all), but we will continue to offer pre-game and post-game activities for many different groups of fans. Often, pre-game activities will be more geared to younger crowds while our post-game activities will be more geared to the "partying" demographic. The Legends offers a great opportunity for many of these events.
One such event, still in the planning stages, will take place prior to the season in Lawrence, KS. This event will be similar to the pre-season party at VooDoo Lounge in 2007 that was very well received by everyone involved. As soon as the details of this event are sewn up, it will be publicized.
Overall, we feel this season will be a great one for the Wizards and truly help us grow our fan base among the 18-34 year-old demographic and the family demographic. From this first match to matches later in the season where we feature post-game events at Legends restaurants and bars, we will provide something for everyone. We truly are Kansas City's Team, as you all know, and we are committed to providing entertainment for the entire community.
As always, thanks for your comments, criticisms and fanhood. We like to see passion; that means people care.

in Lawrence? why so far to the west?
ReplyDeleteI'm getting my picture taken with Scooby-Doo and I'm a 20-something. I grew up on that stuff! Look forward to hearing about promos for the rest of the year.
ReplyDeleteWhy in Lawrence? Maybe to try and tap into the Lawrence/KU market. Now that we will playing at CAB, it would be a lot closer for them to attend games. Get them hooked now and keep them when we move to Bannister in 2 years.
ReplyDeletewhat's the fine for punching scooby-doo? can i try to pull his mask off? will daphne be there too? i wanna buy her a drink.
ReplyDeleteNo word on Daphne, but I wouldn't recommend punching Scooby.
ReplyDeleteLove the idea and appreciate the follow up response. It's nice to see the organization planning events considering the vast demographics. It shows you care!
ReplyDeleteAs a side... My daughter loves Dora! No doubt, she will be excited to see her first KCW game, but getting her picture taken with Dora may just be the highlight of her day.
Assuming she doesn't freak out of course... she'll only be 20 mo! :)
my first reaction was "what is this Mickey Mouse crap!?!"
ReplyDelete...then I realized that the team is not just for me and my demographic, and I appreciate that the team is trying to market to the entire city...which will obviously serve them in the long run.
This is opening day. Are ticket sales really so bad we have to rely on anything other than opening day to sell tickets?
ReplyDeleteCongrats on trying to appeal to many age groups. Of course, some people are more in love with the notion of being a soccer fan than the sport themselves so they will criticize you no matter what they do and claim they love the sport more than anyone else, yet they will be the first to walk away if they feel they are not catered to.
ReplyDeleteJust this weekend, the second half kickoff at Fulham was delayed because their mascot was goofing off on the field. Not that it was right, but it just shows that all these people who criticize because the mythical "rest of the world" doesn't employ gimmicks as well really have no idea what they are talking about.
Good luck this season (except against DC) and good luck with the stadium effort.
anyone else thinking mascots keg stands?
ReplyDeleteLawrence is cool, but there is a big untapped market in Topeka...
ReplyDeleteEZ- hopefully we can get some of the Topeka crowd to the Lawrence event. The drive is essentially the same as someone from the Eastern part of KC driving to CAB for a match, so we'll be working to get people from Topeka into L-town that night.
ReplyDeleteIf it is the only party like this I hope it is not on a school night. As teachers to drive all the way to Lawrence and back gets us in late. I also hope there are chairs so fans can sit down. Will it be somewhere that is ours alone or will we have to share with basketball games as we did last year?
ReplyDeleteMore details on the event shortly, but I can tell you it's not on a school night.
