Hello all, we picked up the first points of the pre-season this morning in a 1-1 tie with D.C. United. Both teams played their "starters," for lack of a better term about 60 minutes, with Kansas City up 1-0 at that point. Jewsbury is getting back to full strength and played the first 60 minutes at right back. Arnaud is progressing nicely but no timetable has been set for his return. Eric Kronberg made his first appearance in a live game setting, playing the final 30 minutes in goal.
Starting line-up (exit time if before 60 minutes):
---------Hartman---------
Jewsbury---Conrad (Marquess 58)---Wahl
-----Zavagnin-------Morsink-----
Myers-----Marinelli------Harrington (Espinoza 46)
-----Sealy--------Pore (Colombano 46)
Lineup 60 and after:
---------Kronberg--------
Leathers---Wahl (McKenzie 78)---Marquess
-------McMahen-----Lowery--------
Raybould-----Espinoza-------Watson
-----Colombano------DiCicco--------
KCW highlights:
8th minute-Marinelli takes free kick from about 30 yards out on the right wing. His in-swinging cross finds the head of Conrad at the back post, but Conrad's header goes just over the bar.
25th minute-Myers gets free up the right flank at full speed and wins the end line. His low cross finds its way through the area between several players but Pore's redirect attempt is collected by D.C. goalkeeper Zach Wells.
35th minute-A great combination through midfield of Harrington, Morsink and Marinelli concludes with Marinelli inside the penalty area moving toward the end line. A D.C. defender locks Marinelli up, eventually getting called for a penalty after much contact between both players and Marinelli's shirt is pulled.
36th minute-Marinelli finishes the play, slotting a low shot inside the left post as Wells goes the other way.
70 and 71st minutes-Both Espinoza and Colombano attempt to chip United goalkeeper Jose Carvallo after turnovers and quick counters from Kansas City. Both attempts are snagged as Carvallo retreats toward his own line.
United's goal came from Pat Carroll in the 87th minute. Ardalan Attar put him through up the left wing and Kansas City goalkeeper Eric Kronberg was caught in between coming out and staying on his line. Carroll was able to loft the ball over the outstretched arm of Kronberg as he retreated toward his goal line.
Overall, the team looked very good. Lots of good effort from everyone on the pitch. Coach was pleased with the game and how the team is progressing with the 3-5-2 system. The Wizards will play split-squad scrimmages against Chicago Fire and Toronto FC Saturday before returning home for a week of training in Kansas City.

Um....where's Hohlbein? I would think he would have a great shot at making the back line.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear the backline held up against the DC "starters" (curious to found out who they were). Carlos sounds like he's been busy in the midfield which is obviously what Curt wants from him. thanks for the update.
ReplyDeleteWhen the highlights of these matches are written up can the other teams chances & offensive movements be noted too?
ReplyDeleteBoth write ups so far (this one and the Crew match) have just focused on our attacking play.
It would be good to hear about our defenders and keeper(s) and be a fairer more balanced look at each of these games.
Just a suggestion and I appreciate the reports so far ...
United started Wells in goal, Namoff, McTavish, Martinez and Burch along the back, Mediate and Fred on the flanks, Simms behind Gallardo and Moreno and Emilio up top.
ReplyDeleteThat's from Goff's blog http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/
Hope that helps mm.
Off Topic but you promised us Stadium Renderings back at the end of January. Any rough drafts or anything you can post other than the existing overhead original mock ups?
ReplyDeleteI know this is off the subject but,
ReplyDeleteWHY IS IT THAT ALL THE OTHER SOCCER BLOGS I READ MENTION EVERY OTHER TEAM LOOKING AT BRINGING IN THIS STRIKER OR THAT MIDFIELDER, BUT NO KC WIZARD ACTION?
ARE YOU GUYS LOOKING TO ADD TO THE ROSTER AT ALL?
yes! good to hear!
ReplyDeleteStadium news? Please. DC looks set to announce plans tomorrow, would be nice for us to announce more plans soon and get the wrecking ball to the mall and surrounding area.
